How to deal with Suicidal Thoughts.

ARUN at one midnight calls Namita standing at the top of his building. The moment he calls him he is weeping his tears out. Hearing him being vulnerable Namita could not make out what has happened to Arun. She is shocked when he says I am ending my life I no longer wish to live.

This makes Namita devasted at a moment she is bewildered to know how she can help him she is not with him physically to go and reach out to him. She calmly asks him please come down and talk to me I will help you.

What makes Arun stand at the cliff of his building?

Why does he wish to end his life?

Is this feeling of suicide peeping for months or what are the causes of such suicidal feelings?

How can Namita prevent Arun from committing suicide?

Alarming signs of suicide

Being depressed or irritable: The person has constant dejection and irritability. A significant risk factor for suicide is depression. After experiencing a period of despair or irritability, the person experiences abrupt tranquility.

• Withdrawing from others: The individual chooses to spend time alone and steer clear of friends and social gatherings. Additionally, individuals stop finding enjoyment or interest in activities they formerly loved.

The person's attitude or behaviour changes, such as speaking or moving at an unusually fast or slow pace. Changes in personality, appearance, or sleep patterns. Additionally, people suddenly stop caring as much about how they look. They sleep significantly more or significantly less than is customary for that person.

• When someone is in a deep state of despair, they may express feelings of helplessness, a lack of purpose for living, burdensomeness, being trapped, or excruciating emotional agony.

• Making ready: The person starts to organise their personal affairs. This could entail paying visits to friends and family members, donating personal items, creating a will, and decluttering their space. The person frequently looks for ways to kill themselves or places to get guns online. Before making a suicide attempt, some people will compose a letter.

• Expressing suicidal intent or making suicide threats: Not everyone who is contemplating suicide will admit to it, and not everyone who makes a suicide threat will do it. However, it is important to take any suicide threats seriously.

How suicide can be prevented.

Determine the symptoms - Passive suicidal ideas may never become active in some people. However, these ideas may ultimately result in suicide preparation or an attempt. Early warning signs that it's time to get assistance include helplessness, a sense of being trapped or feeling like a burden to others.

Get help from an expert - The most effective strategy to deal with suicidal thoughts is typically to work with a qualified mental health practitioner. A therapist can assist you in developing a safety plan, provide direction in detecting potential triggers, and explore treatment alternatives.

Understand your triggers - Things that trigger negative emotions can make you feel worse. Different folks have different triggers. You might discover that some songs, images, or movies worsen your mood. Attempt to avoid these. Making a wellness action plan could increase your self-awareness. You can use it to find the triggers in your life that can lead to illness. You might find it useful to list your triggers in writing. Your ability to manage your emotions or stress levels may improve if you can identify your triggers.

Stay away from substance abuse or alcohol - The areas of your brain that regulate your judgment, focus, behaviour, and emotions are affected by alcohol. You may be more inclined to act on suicidal ideas if you drink alcohol.

• Drugs alter your thoughts and emotions - Drugs have a variety of impacts. Cocaine, for instance, can make you feel good and make you more willing to take chances when you use it. But as the effects wear off, you can experience depression. Hallucinations, disorientation, and paranoia can all be brought on by other substances. If you use illicit drugs, your risk of suicide may increase.

Surround yourself with people - It might be too difficult for you right now to talk to anyone. It's all right. However, try to limit your alone time. You might visit a park, gym, shopping centre, or coffee shop. Even if people don't understand how you're feeling, being around them can help keep you secure.

Keep exercising - Your emotions and thought processes can both benefit from exercise. Dopamine and serotonin are thought to be released during exercise. These hormones promote happiness.

• Suicide can be prevented by using cognitive behavioural therapy.
